I'm New

Hello

I have joined here as we are going through hell trying to get help for my son. He is 12 this month and we finally have been accepted for an assessment for Aspergers. We have only really found out since Xmas that he has this. The Ed Psych has told us that it is this and we must treat him that he has it to make our life easier and boy has it done just that. He is struggling at school big time and never wants to go and i believe he is being picked on. I also have a daughter who is 13 and i think she is struggling to come to terms with how her brother is so any advice would be greatly received. I am married to my lovely hubby who is their step father and we have a black labrador with hip dysplatia.

I am hoping to find that i am not alone with all this and that everything we are experiencing is "normal"

Sorry to hear your story. It seems so wrong that it is so difficult for parents to access the help they need.

I hope somebody on here with more experience can help you out. I would put everything you have said above into a letter and take to your GP and ask for urgent CAMHS referral. Have you tried the YoungMinds parent helpline - you can tell them your situation, they'll give advice, but they can also arrange for a specialist to give you a call back within a week and they'll talk to you for up to 50 minutes.

Do you think it would be worth applying for a Statement for your son too? Just thinking that maybe it's worth setting the ball rolling on as many things in parallel as you can. Perhaps there are boarding schools that may help with his needs (e.g. the Priory schools) - but he'd need a statement to get in.

Do you think involving your local MP could help you get the services you need? Might be no harm in sending a letter off with the info you've told us on here.
