I'm New

Hello

I have joined here as we are going through hell trying to get help for my son. He is 12 this month and we finally have been accepted for an assessment for Aspergers. We have only really found out since Xmas that he has this. The Ed Psych has told us that it is this and we must treat him that he has it to make our life easier and boy has it done just that. He is struggling at school big time and never wants to go and i believe he is being picked on. I also have a daughter who is 13 and i think she is struggling to come to terms with how her brother is so any advice would be greatly received. I am married to my lovely hubby who is their step father and we have a black labrador with hip dysplatia.

I am hoping to find that i am not alone with all this and that everything we are experiencing is "normal"

  • Hi there,

I'm new here too. My son is also 12 and we have just received a diagnosis of ASD. We ended up going down the diagnosis route after my son started a new school for Yr 7 in Sept and wouldn't go back after Oct half term, found another school which he started in Jan and we stumbled through till Feb half term but he hasn't been back since. He also started turning his sleeping pattern upside down and staying awake all night so that he was asleep when it was time for school - and now I'm having a constant struggle trying to get sleep back to 'normal', but if we manage a couple of normal-ish nights he'll suddenly stay awake 24 hours and it's all upside down again!

So don't worry, you're not alone in all this. And I can certainly sympathise with you going through hell.

We received our diagnosis from CAMHS, but that seemed to be the end of their (and NHS) involvement  and they say it is now down to education and social care. We're currently applying for a statutory assessment for a statement - so we'll see where that goes.

Generally feeling pretty lost! We didn't even get a follow up appointment, the diagnostic report was just posted to us.
