It's a miracle I got in

........and probably will hardly manage to again, as I may have forgotten my password ready. After a zillion things going wrong.....including the fact that all my brilliant ideas for a handle were already taken. Great minds.

I have not been diagnosed and won't be, I don't live in the UK and no doubt more ties to my lovely home country will be cut still further in the next year.

It was just seen as craziness when I was a kid, in the 1960's. It could be a spectrum thing but it could be something else. The red flags for the A word for me are that I regressed at 18 months and no longer spoke using grammatically correct sentences. Tantrums and obsessions during childhood, being scapegoated at high school and repeatedly being criticised from student years onwards for not engaging in enough eye contact.

But it is on the other side of the boot too as I teach at a high school for children who wish to specialise in the arts, and many are now getting diagnoses of dyspraxia, dyslexia as well as the odd autism I do feel the need to know how to work with these kids.

I would love to hear from older people who are only now recognising the hidden thing after all these years. Or from other teachers also confronting similar things.

The most important thing is my art incidentally.

  • I lost my dog a few years ago. The ****ty part of having pets is they aren't here for too long.Pensive

  • I have days like that. I don't even have a cat anymore    : /

  • Last time I was around a ginger cat I ended up looking like the thing from Fantastic 4. So I'd agree!Sweat smile

  • Apparently, cat allergies are worse with ginger tom cats. So I was told by a doctor anyway.

My daughter wasn't allergic to the black and white cat we had throughout her childhood, but developed increasingly bad reactions to the ginger cat we got after she'd left home so that she couldn't come home for a visit without starting a course of anti-histamines a week in advance.

  • Lol, yeah that grid thing is a bit nasty! I can deal with pain but itching is something else. I can't remember which allergy bump I got from the scratch test but it itched for about a week after.

That doctor sounds a little idealistic! Moving house is a bit difficult to do at the drop of a hat! Good to hear you paid your mortgage. That can be a lot of stress.

Being allergic to cats or dogs is a bit of a downer. If I'm around a cat I break out in hives. Strange thing is I had a cat in my house until I was about 7. I had no reaction. I had the test a few years later and I was allergic. I must have had a tolerance to my cat.

  • If you can find a tag that is more vague and broad than specific it seems to work better.

I'm guessing warm or soft colours on the design?

Yeah, It's good to get your art out there but getting a bit of cash is nice, it can be used to create more art!

  • I have always used more than one tag. I will look at the ones I used for that one item though to see what's different. It's very popular as a throw pillow for some reason.

I never wanted to create just for commercial purposes though if a work can sell via this avenue it's a bonus.

  • Yes I did have that grid and the scratches on my arm and it was agony! The doctor was really sorry for me over that. He told me if my home attracted dust, which it does, I should move. But I had a mortgage on my home, though it is paid off now.

I bought a humidifier and  decent vacuum which help, but not enough.

Luckily there was no reaction to cats though there was just a little to dogs

  • I don't suffer as badly from IBS anymore. I have lots of "funny" stories about it, albiet very lowbrow humour. Piggypoohpants is one, my ex gave it that name, but you probably don't want to hear the rest....... Flushed

I haven't changed my diet but I drink far less alcohol than I used to. In fact I barely drink at all now.

I'm allergic to dust mites too. I also had that test! Did they draw a grid on your arm, then dip the silver scratchy things into liquid and scratch different parts of the grid? I was allergic to cats and dust mites. I like cats they make great pets, so I'm a bit miffed about that. Dust mites however don't make great pets and don't chase laser pens........ Wink

  • I wasn't aware that they didn't count Coeliac's and IBS with ASD in the UK. At my diagnosis the psychologist asked if I had any "toilet problems". I told her about my IBS then she asked if anything like that ran in the family. My father and 4 of my uncles have Coeliac's and she seemed to be taking it in. Maybe she had some feeling herself that there was a link. In my Autism group there are a few people with either IBS or Coeliac's, actually about half the group! I'd say that it has a link myself, hopefully they will admit this soon. It could help in diagnosis.

BTW I hate the way Coeliac's sufferers are ripped off by the supermarkets. It's ******* scandalous. People need those products and they know it. It's not a matter of lifestyle choice. My blood boils at the way they exploit the situation.

  • If you were selling a Talking Heads T-shirt. Put the tags as rock, classic rock, punk, new wave, david byrne, tina weymouth, once in a lifetime, tom tom club, new york, speaking in tongues, nostalgia, 1970's, 1980's. Try and get as many things into the tag that relate to that item. So that a lot of wider searches will include the item. So people might search for New York, that would include the T-shirt. New York would cover a lot of items. So would rock. So pick a tag that would have a broad base but relates to the item. If you just put the tag as Talking Heads it has less avenues to be found. Good luck selling!

  • I have Coeliac disease, diagnosed two years before autism, but in the UK not seen as having any connection with 'Autism'.  I joined Coeliac UK before NAS.  My old friend said what's the third thing, as it has to come in threes...

  • I have IBS too and cut out wheat, which helps. I was tested for food allergies a few years ago when my cough started getting worse. The scratches he made on my arm were agony, but the results for airborne allergies told the story about the latter. House mites indoors were the culprit and ragweed and mugwort outside and maximum scores for each! Short of wearing a mask or bubble over my head at all times I still don't know what the solution to that is!

I did go for acupuncture in my 20's and was told I had a metal imbalance, looks like metal is still ongoing. The weak spots with metal are the gut as well as the lungs. Lungs, incidentally, can manifest as obsessiveness and issues with getting close to people.......

  • Ooh do tell! There is someone I know on FB who claims to know how to sell his work on FB. RB has changed a lot over the years and is annoyingly Americanised now. I think they brought an angel from there aboard. I shall have to look at the tags I put on the one that sells.

  • To work the algorithms, you need to plan your tags carefully. My ex is on Red Bubble and she learned how to work them to her advantage.

  • I had IBS, that was one of the things that helped my GP get a diagnosis set up. Apparently Coeliacs and IBS is a common thing in ASD people. My GP was very competent in noticing the things that led to my diagnosis.

"Autistic ally aware"  I like that! It's a state of mind I'm gonna explore!

  • Lowlife is a very polite way of describing the little runt! Oh I spelt that wrong.......Wink

I don't understand it with my family. We've got a few schizophrenics, alcholics and all types of people with "problems". I've got a nice amount of dirt to throw back if I need to. The schizophrenics can't help it but some of the others can help what they are doing, and I'll remind them if I need to. I'm always polite and helpful to them, that's what is the thing that gets to me with the people that have been *****. They are just weak people trying to claw power from something because they have issues. It's not about grudges.

It sounds like those people criticizing you for art, goth style and art aspirations wanted you to be some kind of vicarious avatar. If someone has a talent they are interested in it should be encouraged, if anything. I'd rather see someone be persuing something that is making them happy, than grinding out a living doing something they hate. Marriage isn't a race either. I know people who married just for the sake of it who hate each other and are more than happy to put that stuff on their kids. Living for other peoples expectations is one of the most dangerous things you can do.

I hope they saw a happy you when you next saw them!

Oh I forgot that song!ThumbsupRIP Ian Dury! Didn't know that Sly and Robbie played on that song! They must have made a lot of money that year, Ian Dury, Grace Jones and all the reggae they produced!

  • Ah please don’t apologise, I just meant hard to read as you’ve been through a lot.  The twins are very happy boys it’s early days. Take care x

  • Thanks for your kind words. Sorry if anything I wrote was a bit alarming in relation to your twins. I guess life can throw anything at people regardless of their condition. My post was a bit negative in a few aspects, I just got on a stream of conciousness rant! I've also had positive experiences since being diagnosed. Some friends have been very good to me. Some family too, most in fact. Understanding about ASD is progressing everyday and support too. Don't fear for them, things are moving fast! All the best to you and your twins!

Oh and here's one for the compassionate and patronising brigade.
