Hello... daughter with Aspergers ...

Hello all.....Cool

Let me introduce myself to you all! I am a full time mum to my two daughters one of whom is ten years old and has a formal diognoisis of Aspergers and Dyspraxia and in turn this brings problems with sensory processing disorder.

The way in which the ASD effects my dd is socially she really struggles to understand social situations or peoples expressions, she is unable to play fairly with her friends or with her sister as she feels the need to be in control of any game shes playing. She finds the school day overwhelming and gets angry in which she needs time out. My dd does not cope with change at all, even the smallest change needs major preparation.

Sleep is a challenge despite medication she still wakes every few hours unable to get back to sleep.

Eating is a challenge too, there are so many things she can not tolerate so she does have a special diet and nothing can be mixed together.

My dd has so many positive aspects tooLaughing

Her memory is fantastic long term that is! She remembers holidays etc in such detail from when she was two..... she loves to write poems and draws such amazing pictures. She has fantasic confidence with horses too but is afraid of all other animals.....

I have given you all a bit of background as i am hoping some of you can relate to our situation and i hope to make some friendships with people in similar situations.

As a mum to an autistic child i often feel a sense of being alone despite having people around me, none of my friends have an autistic child so although they are lovely they struggle to understand the impact autism can have on a child and their family.

Anyway I think i have said enough for now.

Thank you for reading

Cool

  • Hi Horsegirl

Welcome!  I have found this site my friend when I have had my toughest times when I have felt there is no-one nearby that will understand over the past 2 years.  Like you say, some people indicate they want to offer you some understanding, but just can't see the invisible bit or understand our lives.  I find there is no quick way of explaining ASD in a tangible way.  Once in a while a wee gem comes along though and does not need any explanations at all, they just naturally "get it".  My son is 10 and diagnosed High Functioning Autism but for sure has ADHD too.

It is great your daughter has such a great rapport with horses, it must be a great release for her.  My son also has an amazing long term memory.  He loves his lego, Minecraft and stop motion/digital animation stuff.

Nice to hear from you anyway I am sure you will find this forum really supportive, I certainly have.

    Take care
