What help should a 3 year old 'autistic' child get?
I have a little boy, who is seeing the pediatric doctor every 6 months to a year, to assess whether he has autism or not. He didn't walk until he was 21 months old, he didn't crawl until he was 16 months old, he did bum shuffle a tiny bit, he lacks the eye contact and hates being outside the house in unfamiliar places not just hates, it's total meltdown until we get home, in the trolly at the supermarket he scratches at my face, he bites, hits, nips and scratches me, he doesn't talk and has never said one word, he just does a humming sound alot. He doesn't like toys very much just ones that spin, and flipping pages of books, he loves the washing machine screams to put it on, and he loves the bath, he jumps constantly all day and claps his hands and looks at the main light in the living room a lot of the time, he likes rough play like me tickling him, he can catch and throw a ball, he loves cartoons like peppa pig, he doesn't feed himself I feed him with a spoon as he just simply refuses, he uses a sippy cup and is still in nappies as I'm struggling to see how to teach him, as he's totally without speech or understanding, he can't walk up and down steps, he can crawl up but slips back down, hes very clumsy falls a lot...bust lips many occasions, he's got no spacial awareness, when out and about he refuses to walk will throw himself in the road, bang his head on the pavement then I will pick him up and he will attack at my face, but he will run around in my house jumping all day but refuses to walk outside, he's not sensitive to noise so much, but very sensitive to hurting him self even if it's a little bump he's goes hysterical. He's suffered with ear infections, glue ear from birth and they say he has strabismus. It took me six months to get him to settle in nursery the first few months he was violently sick so I had to bring him home after half an hour, but after nearly a year he's settled in and doesn't cry when I leave. There's probably loads more that I am missing. I think his old paediatric doctor mentioned global development delay in one of his assessment forms but they haven't really explained that either.
They haven't given him a label yet we just keep going to him appointments. He gets his nursery... should be 15 hours a week, but I take him for 12 hours a week, because he gets over tired and hard for the nursery staff, he get d-catch funding, I think they employed one extra staff with the funds. He also gets a portage worker who visits every couple of week at his nursery.
When did your autistic child get diagnosed, and what help did they receive??
Nursery recently said they can't handle his needs for health and safety reasons, so not sure where to go next.
Thanks.
