Most Out Of SALT

DS ASD DX'd age 5 emerging speech.

SALT is coming round to our house 12/03/12.

How do you get the most out of these meetings as I feel they are so precious and want to make the best out of what we have?

Currently he has 10 visits a year mostly in school. I would prefer more intensive help especially as he has made great progress and is responding to treatment.

I have written some notes to give to her (similar to the one I posted on here to the GP), things I would like to discuss.


He is repeating everything you say as well as trying to say his own incomplete sentences. His speech just recently has taken a jump for the better so his development is coming on. 


I want to know what we can do to support him. Feel totally out of our depth at times and all the information we need to move forward and re-assure us.
Strategies that would support and enable G in making him social. G is without friends and skills that would improve his life greatly.
Then offer a list of recommendations to the school on how best to help him. If the label isn't there, you cannot access the support and help that will lead to 'solutions'.

We have a PECS book folder but I am interested in Proloquo2go for an iPad, communication grids on my laptop (powered by Widgit) and GoTalk devises, Vox , and The Grid. In the TAC meeting they poo pooed any technology as I felt they want him to learn the old fashioned way.

I also worry that County Council staff do seem to have standard answers (eg you have given him a label now) brainwashed to them to save money or avoid timewasters or whatever.

Any comments greatly appreciated.

    I am a SALT myself.. and all those few moments are peanuts indeed. We do what we can. In Holland there are also organized weekends for kids with ADHD, ASD, ADD, etc. To learn to interact and grow in self esteem, and having fun while doing that.

    My experience is that most schools or other companies  which ought to be supporting only see the 'problem child'.. the problem is NOT in the child.. The problem is in how they perceive him!

    Really.. I've seen, and it is plain and simple.. ie. In school there is a bright kid, sensitive and with some little quirky things at times.. but he is so bright.. School sees him as a Highly Sensitive Person. He is almost put on a peddistle! The same kid could just aswell have been diagnozed Aspie.. and see how they treat him then.. A world of difference.. like night and day!

    They ought to be ashamed of themselves! For the take away a lot of his confidence just by treating him with respect!!

    It sounds like you have a pretty clear idea of what you want to achieve from the meeting. 

    The 3 SALT's, actually 4, I have come across have been fantastic and quickly offer strategies, support etc. appropriate to the child's age and needs at the time.  I asked for a copy of any recommendations or social programmes to be emailed to me as well as school so I could have it on record and is really useful if you need to share with other specialists or move school.  You will have their email address then which is really useful if you have any queries or concerns you want to follow up with them at a later date.

    They can offer lots of good tools to support and assist children, some of which work a little, a lot or not at all.
