Hello I'm new and need advice

Hello everyone

I'm new to the forum and also to Autism. I have not been diagnosed with it just yet and only recently discussed it with my GP. It was my employer who asked me if I have Autism or if I had Aspergers (still researching on aspergers) my initial reaction was what is autism but I can now see where she is coming from.

I have always been different from when I was growing up and at the age of understanding things. I struggle with meeting new people and making friends and I creep them out I think as I ask things at the wrong time or say something that I cannot do etc.

I also suffer from dyspraxia, anxiety and depression and also have a disability and so I have never been properly diagnosed. My question and the advice I need is that my GP has asked for a questionnaire or test results that will identify if I have autism or not but I cannot seem to find somthing that is from a official website such as this website.

I would appreciate any help or advice.

Thank you.

  • Hi maverick, there was also a reply from somebody else who tried to post it twice but somehow it disappeared. Not sure if you saw it, so I'll try posting it, let's see if it stays (can't see anything in there someone wouldn't like, so guess it was not deleted but had some technical problem).

Anyway, according to NICE guidelines your GP shouldn't need you to do more than the AQ10 to get things started.

Here's the message, not sure from whom:

    "Hey Maverick

You're GP was probably referring to the 'Autism
Qutient' (AQ) test. It asks up to 50 questions, albeit can be shortened. You
can quickly find it via any internet search engine. But, there are some
    useful links below.

    http://aspergersquiz.com/

    or

    http://aspergerstest.net/aq-test/

    The
Autism Quotient test was the one my Doctor wanted me to complete prior to him
considering a referral. On the test, you score between 0 and 50. The average
'normal' (aka: 'neurotypical') person typically scores between 16 and 21. I
think the threshold for autism is 32.

When I went to see the
Physciatrist for my formal diagnosis, she even did the same test again right
there-and-then. The Doctor had told me that in his opinion - while the test
is no means concrete - it does have a strong correlation / reliability when
    compared to the diagnostic outcome.

    There are other tests out
there too. For example, I found the 'Rdos Aspie Quiz' to provide a nice bit
of insight into my particular neuro-tapestry! I've included a link below, if
    you're feeling curious.

    Good
luck on your journey of self-discovery!"

  • Thank you for the link oktanol. I appreciate it.

  • Hi maverick,

The GP probably means this test here, it's just one page, 10 questions. They use it as a tool to decide whether to send you for an assessment. Seems a bit odd when they don't just give you a copy but was the same here.

Good luck then, sounds like you've got a nice employer who does consider that sort of problem instead of assuming that you want to annoy them or something!
