    Hi 94jv11

Firstly, welcome to the forum. There is a variety of people with autism here, I was diagnosed much later than you (i.e. age 56) and I expect you have more difficulties than me.

Yorkshirelass has been through this process and has good advice. Have you looked at the advocacy scheme www.autism.org.uk/advocacyandautism

I think that it might help your mum if you could put down in words exactly why you don't go out alone and why you can't use public transport. How would these things seem to you, what would you feel and how would you react.

Have you tried to overcome these problems? Some people can learn to cope with situations if they have some help and encouragement.

  • Hi 94jv11,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. While I don't know much about the benefits and appeals system personally, we have a section on the site about benefits (www.autism.org.uk/.../benefits-care.aspx) including a part specifically about the appeals process (www.autism.org.uk/.../appeals.aspx) which explains it in detail.

Hopefully this will be of some help to you or your mother in putting together an appeal.

    Best wishes,

    Ross - mod
