Hi i,m new on here and my son has just recently been giving a diagnosis of asd at the age of 6.Can anyone offer me any advice on what comes next or what help and support that i can get for my little pumpkin please because so far all i,ve had is a form to register him as disabled.

  • Hi deb69,

You might want to take a look at our page 'After Your Child's Diagnosis', where you can find information about helplines, social services, financial support and advice that might help you and your child going forward. www.autism.org.uk/.../recently-diagnosed.aspx

You may also want to search in the Autism Services Directory, where you can look for various services in your local area www.autism.org.uk/directory.aspx

I hope you can find something here to help you,

    Ross

  • Hi thank you both for your replies.I don,t get the level of violence that you have deal with yet my son just hits out at us at the moment and is very destructive with objects around him.I will take your advice and see what help i csn get for him.

  • I did not get a form to register my child as disabled, but what I will say as for what happens next? absolutely nada, I always though if my son got a diagnoses we would get him the help he needs uhhhhhmmm got that totally wrong!!!! If you want any help for your child you need to go looking for it im afraid to say.

We had the violence, we had the knives we had the complete meltdowns absolutely everyday it was awful, there was nothing or nobody that helped us, untill I took my son to A&e after him trying to get hold of a knife to kill himself, twice I took him there and we were given an app for cahms who discharged us as he was no imminent risk, then 2nd time we got reffered to a lady who was amazing and she has signposted me to other services put me on course and given me advice if it werent for her, I would have struggled still.

Please google as much as you can in your area and get in touch with them and ask school for as much help as poss xxx

  • I can only say what happened for me as an adult newly diagnosed but cannot comment what happens for young children.  It varies from area to area I think and may be why no one seems to have replied to this post. Sorry.
