Telling my son he's on the spectrum

my son was formally diagnosed with high functioning autism today. He's 10. We have spoken about ASD in general terms in the past but we really need some advice about how to tell him (without destroying his already incredibly fragile self esteem)

  • That's great advice. Thanks. Unfortunately the person who made the diagnosis is leaving tomorrow! I think we will need to talk about it at home.

  • I've recently been diagnosed with ASD and I'm 16, from a child/young persons point of view I feel grateful my consultant sat with me, told me and let me ask him any questions I had. I think the best thing to do, book an appointment with the person who diagnosed him and let them tell him because they'll have experience in informing children/young people on the spectrum and then let him ask questions, maybe also print off child friendly information about it and give it to him.

    Hope I helped,

    Laura
