Should I make a formal complaint against my GP?

I already have an ASD diagnosis, but I asked to be referred for ADHD diagnosis - I need diagnosis to try medication to help symptoms like problems reading and executive dysfunction, also I'm on ESA due to another disability but a formal ADHD diagnosis would help retain ESA (I'm due reassessment). 

I asked to be referred over a year ago, every few months I'd chase it up as I'd not heard anything - the GP kept telling me they'd chase it up but again and again I'd hear nothing. A month ago I was asked by my GP's surgery to come in to fill in a form as part of the ADHD assessment referral...as it turns out they should have done this over a year ago, as they didn't it meant they hadn't referred me!

So now I've finally been referred I'm on an 18 month waiting list, if they'd referred me when they were supposed to I'd be at the front of that waiting list now. 

I'm not sure if it's even worth making a complaint.

    I had similar experience with an OCD diagnosis it has been a nightmare. In my case when my GP said he would follow it up, he did actually follow it up. The problem was with the Access & Assesment Team, who kept refusing the request, with very poor communication.

    Not sure you complaint is going to help things, I would suggest contacting PALS explain the situation and see if they can help to move things along.

    My personal opinion, is the state of mental health services is a disgrace, and I feel the kind of problems we have experienced are down to processes that have been intentionally set up to be abused in order to releive the pressure on resources that are totally inadequate. In my situation, I don't feel the GP or the Access and Assesment Team were at fault. I decided to complain to the trust about the processes.

    Another thing you could try, not sure if this applies to your GP surgery. I discoverred from the Autism Diagnostic Team, that there is this mythical person who is known as "The Link Worker" in my surgery, and I should ask for an appointment with them. Apparently the GPs would never mention or suggest this resource. Their role is to ensure all the nececary teams are aware and are working together correctly.
