Fluexotine - Prozac for obsessional thoughts / OCD

Hi,

When I was with the autism diagnostic team they picked up that I had ocd traits. It mainly affects me with supermarkets and not being able to do my food shopping so I can plan for meals or maintain a healthy diet. At the moment not managing food at all sometimes, skipping meals frequently because of poor appetite from taking Mirtazepine for anxiety and depression.

I feel my autism plays in with my problems at supermarkets, so solving OCD traits is not going to be the total solution.

Would like to from others who have been prescribed ProZac / Fluoxetine, and their experience of the drug

I've been on fluoxetine a couple of times, but it didn't help: it just made me really anxious and worsened my already pretty bad insomnia.  I found sertraline and citalopram (same class of drugs, but they all seem to have somewhat different effects) worked much better for me.  Unfortunately both gave me huge carb cravings, which is not cool considering I'm diabetic (and trying to lose weight, with limited success) so I had to give up on them too.

One thing I have learnt from speaking to people about these drugs is that they really do affect people differently: in fact they can even affect the same person differently over time.

I can't speak with any sort of authority about OCD, however: it's something that's never been added to my expansive portfolio of diagnoses!

The only thing we have to keep an eye on is she is beginning to have the odd nose bleed and bruises very easily since taking the medication.

That sounds like a very serious adverse reaction. I hope you have discussed that with a doctor or pharmacist?

  • Our daughter is on fluoxetine for her OCDs,  she has been on it for nearly six months and it's slowing increasing we have seen a massive difference. She is more open and able to talk about how she is feeling where as before she was aggressive, violent and extremely volatile towards us. Now she is doing a lot better, however since the OCD and anxiety has calmed she has very intense vocal and motor tic's which is suspected to be diagnosed with tourettes In a few more months.  I do wonder if the medication has caused the tic's but one thing is for sure she seems a lot happier and now and again she will even let you give her a hug :-)

When our daughter started taking it we noticed a change within a couple of days and it normally says a few weeks but it was almost like a flick of a switch.

    wish you all the best

  • Yeah i get restless leg syndrome, not sure from which meds though. Did the problem stop now your off Fluoxetine Tom?

  • Hi Random

I am currently on Fluoxetine 40mg, and they do not really do much for me to be honest.

I have a diagnosis of OCD and traits of personality disorder and now am having assessment for ASD. I am also taking Olanzapine(anti psychotic). I get very anxious and suffer from depressive episodes.
