Who has to know and can a decision be overturned?

I have looked through other posts and may have missed similar information so thought I would ask!

My daughter is 9, has a diagnosis of ADHD and DCD. She is to have an ASD assessment very soon.

Most of the time I believe my daughter is on the spectrum although there are times when I am not so sure. She is high functioning although her behaviour in school is impeding her academic development. She is on the SEN register and has high needs funding (no SSEN/EHCP).

No we have been given a date for the assessment I am worried that I have made a mistake. I have read the thread about pros and cons of a diagnosis which was helpful.

Her father and I are not together but he does have parental responsibility. He is opposed to what he calls 'labelling'. So the question is does he have to know about a diagnosis should there be one? Will he get a letter following the assessment?

If my daughter got a diagnosis of ASD could thise be changed/overturned in the future?

I work with adolescents with behavioural difficulties inclusing ASD and have a reasonable understanding of ASD.

Any feedback would be appreciated

Thanks

  • Thanks for your reply. To be honest I think I am afraid of my daughters fathers response as he can be quite vile at times and gave me a very hard time over her initial diagnosis of ADHD and more recently when I wanted to apply for an EHC plan.

My initial motivation for a diagnosis was to have any support available to her which still stands, however she has already has additional support at both swimming and gymnastic clubs and gets DLA without an ASD diagnosis.

I want to do whats best for her but just worry about  making the 'right' decision.

May I ask what sort of problems you may feel could have been avoided with an earlier diagnosis?

    Thanks again
