Toilet Training

Not sure if this is the right Topic to discuss this under but was looking for advice on how to go about toilet training my 3 year old non verbal son.

He has started pulling at his nappies after he does the toilet and is showing discomfort wearing them so I'm thinking it's now time to try.

I just dont quite know how to go about it?

Any advice would be really appreicated.........

  • Hello there,

You could buy an "exciting" potty in his favourite colour, favourite pattern,  a sticker on it, anything that he is interested in ? & then encourage him to sit as much or as frequently as possible, making a huge fuss of him whenever he produces something. If he's afraid of the fuss , noise etc then replace with a calm smiley hug or whatever is special to your son but generally communicate that anything IN the potty is great!

If he's big enough you could even go straight to the toilet with a booster seat, so long as he's not afraid or off balance. Again lots & lots of repetition & lots of lots praise in a form that he enjoys - whoops, hugs, stickers, whatever works for you.

You can use his favourite toy, character or teddy to demonstrate how they use the potty / toilet & how they love to do their wees in the toilet etc. & there are lots of colourful picture books with toilet training stories.

Try to stay calm & patient without any frustration for any accidents & he'll get there. Lots of repetition & calm encouragement.

    Hope that helps Best wishes
