7yr old son, not sure where to turn

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and i need to seek some support and advice.

My seven year old son has had numerous tests done, been through intensive speech and language from 4 years old, has had one ADOS done last year which came back negative, GP would not give a referral to CAHMS, paediatrician has seen him on and off since he was two years old and just keeps telling me "we should wait a year" every year, been involved in a SSAS observation in which professionals who deal with autism have said he needs to be referred back to the paeditrician asap (the paediatrician just sent me a letter saying that my son wont be having another ados done because we have to wait a year).

School have been great and have gotten an outreach centre involved from a specialist school, involved my son in numerous intervention classes and have pretty much done one to one with him throughout his school life even though he is not statemented which has improved his work greatly.  School are also currently ruling out SPLD's and have given the opinion that he is definitley not dyslexic.

I have been advised to get a referral to CAHMS (advised by the paeditrician), which i will be chasing up when school restarts.  I have spoken to the behaviour support officer within my sons school and he is willing to help any way he can and hopefully I will get the referral.  But i am almost positive that my son will not pass the pre entry requirment needed by CAHMS as he does not have any negative behaviour traits.

So im slightly at a loss and unsure what my next move should be.  I have all these professionals saying that my son, and i quote, "definitley has traits of autism" and then on the other hand, everywhere i turn, doors close in my face from the help and support i need!

Can anyone help?

Thanks guys

  • Oh it seems my reply didnt post.

    Thanks for your reply.

im not thrilled at the idea that cahms is the only option for me at the moment. I think i will request a different paediatrician as this one doesnt seem to be helping me a whole lot at the moment.  I think it is due to my son not showing all the triad of impairments related to autism, but as we all know, the spectrum is so broad.  It's just really frustrating.

im not generally a pushy person, but it seems that i will have to be to get anywhere! Do i contact the paediatrician directly?

School have been brilliant, i cant fault them at all.  they are doing everything they can to help him, but can only do so much.

Thanks for your kind words and support, it means alot to me whilst im going through this trying time! xx

  • It was my son's paediarician who referred him for his autism assessment when my son was only 3yrs old and at age 4 he was diagnosed with aspergers. Fortunately it was not CAMHS who assessed as since then alot of his autistic behaviour by them has been put down to our parenting skills! Good luck to you if CAMHS assess your child! Keep asking for the assessment from your paediatrician and don't take any of this wait a year story, parents have to go to battle for their kids, i'm glad to hear school has been supportive, many kids are not that lucky, even with a statement!
