brain injury to ASD diagnosis

Hi, my daughter is six and received a asd dignosis in oct 2010. She was a 'neuro typical' child ie developing normally up until the age of three when she had a prolonged seizure which caused a significant brain injury. She now presents as having most ASD traits (active but odd) and also adhd traits and other learning difficulties. I guess i am wondering if anyone has had similar experiences. Can/should she have a diagnosis if she was not genetically autistic?

  • You can have ASD regardless of whether it was caused by genetic or environmental factors, like the epileptic seizure you describe. What matters is not so much cause (which is always biological, whether genetic or otherwise) but the symptoms, which will be life-long, although they can lessen with time.

I  stopped growing in the womb due to maternal stress, but I don't know whether my AS was caused by this alone, genetics, or a combination of the two. But I don't think it really matters too much. What matters is that I have the right support to help me live my life.
