My son

I have a 17 year old son who I originally thought was dyslexic. After being assessed this was not the case. One of his college assessors did mention autism but it was not her particular specialist field. My problem is that my son is so awfully low in confidence and self esteem, I think that mentioning autism or aspbergers could make him feel even worse. He has drifted apart from all his friends and only wants to watch tv or game on his play station. If he does speak its one or at the most two words. What do I do?

  • Hi Migsy,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Autism is a completely unknown area to me, so just when I thought I knew everything I find myself on a learning curve again. I agree with your reply, I just need to decide on the best way to broach the subject. I'm really pleased I've joined this site because there is so much helpful information.

  • I think that if he has an assessment of some sort and a specific problem is identified then he can get access to the correct help.  His confidence may then improve once he gets some help and others can understand why he is the way he is.
