Diagnosis via school or doctors? Confused

Hi I am new to this forum and was wondering if someone could give me a bit of advice.

From the age of around 2 years old I've noticed odd little things about my son which understandably family and friends put down to it "he's an only child" or "he'll grow out of it" and even "I'm not firm enough with his behaviour etc". He started slow with his speech and needed some speech therapy, he is still very compulsive/obsessive and struggles to carry out a task from start to finish constantly jumping from one thing to another, scared of the loud noises like hairdryer and hovers and bizarrely terrified of the red standby dot on the TV or other appliances but mainly the TV.

He is now 7 years old and these things have never gone away and have gotten worse.  When he was in reception I was called in for a meeting about his "naughty" behaviour with his class teacher and headteacher. I asked them both what they thought of the fact that he could have sometning along the lines of thinking at the time ADHD and they basically laughed at me and said I wokld know about it if he did have that, bearing in mind I was closed to tears at this point expressing that at home I feel I struggle to cope somedays.

He is now in year 2 and his current teacher is very concerned and said herself that he isn't normal in the the way he acts. He has started having meltdowns in school if there is a different teacher in his class even ones he knows, sits on his own table in class, can't wait his turn, loves to talk about himself what he likes etc, hasn't qgot many friends and prefers to stand with the teachers at break time, doesn't interact with the other children with tasks.  i was called in over 6 months ago to fill out a pupil referral form with the schools SENCO teacher and was that it was an applicantion for someone to come in to school and work witb but so far nothing has happened. I asked the SENCO whether I needed to contact my doctor and was told not to as these pupil referral people were the best people to get him referred on (if needed).

Months have passed and i constantly ask his teacher if the help has arrived and she says no but then tells me that his is going downhill with his behaviour and that he will most probably will be referred on and that the school are making their own observations.

I am wondering whether I should go see my doctor about him or do I leave it in the hands of the school? I don't know what happends next after the pupil referral people come in and who he Will get referred on to? Would it be the same people my doctor would refer him to? I am writing this now as today has upset me as my son told me he has to do his year two SATS in his headteachers office alone. I really feel I need some more support.

  • Yes! I'd always go via the gp. Schools can drag their feet. You may need a diagnosis before you can get the support your son needs - this will most likely be via an EHC plan which you can request from your local authority, school or gp. The sooner things get under way the better as it can all take time. I bypassed the senco at out school and went straight to he head. Ask school for any behaviour reports they have and keep log of any conversations. Write down all your own concerns or observations. Take everything to the gp ( perhaps phone ahead and ask for a double appointment - your son doesn't need to be there). Find local support groups for further help. Good luck, be strong.
