Unsure what to do

I was talking to my consultant from an ED unit. He said in my final 2 appointments that I am probably on the Aspergers spectrum. He asked me at the time if I would want to look into it further, but I said I wasn't sure. This was around a month ago and it's still bugging me whether I should do something. It would clear a few things up in my head and maybe explain a few things if I went for a diagnosis. However I don't really know how to go about that or if it's worth the hassle. I'm 18 male and at university.

Thanks in advance for advice.

P.S Sorry if this in the wrong sub-forum. This is my first post.

  • Hi. I'm an adult with aspergers, but don't have a "formal" diagnosis.

I started to suspect it a while back and took an online AQ test, which gave a score which indicated it was highly likely. I saw a GP with mental health experience recently because I was suffering from stress and anxiety and mentioned my suspicions. He asked me to send him my AQ test responses and after assessing these he agreed with me and offered me a referral to a specialist if I wanted it.

I have declined this,  because :

    - I generally cope OK and hold down a job, so it wouldn't lead to any support. (I've also heard that not having major problems with day to day life can be taken by some health professionals as an indication that you don't have aspergers)

    - A diagnosis is more often given at a young age, so that children can get support during their development.

    - I heard that you have to take a parent or person who knew you during your childhood to the assessment, so they can report any developmental problems you had and what your behaviour was like. This isn't possible for me, and if it was I would not agree to it as it would be too uncomfortable.

    - Some adults have reported their experiences of being diagnosed on here, and while many report a satisfaction with knowing at last why they are like they are,  some have found it a difficult, even traumatic experience.

I have just accepted the results of my AQ test and the offer of a referral as a confirmation of what I had already thought, , after reading about aspergers traits and thinking "wow - that's me"

If you feel you do need support, a diagnosis might be a good idea.  Google the AQ test and take it, if you haven't already - it was written by a psychologist as a screening tool and results from this are widely accepted - it will give you an indication of whether you're on the autism spectrum and can be taken with you to an appointment if you choose to be referred.

You can also read posts on here by adults who've been officially diagnosed or have got advice about it - look in the sections on diagnosis and adults with autism.

    Good luck

  • I would get him to lookfurther into it to be honest, 1) a diagnose will help you help yourself. 2) to be able to get other people to give you the help you need, 3) put your mind at rest. I personally cant see any drawbacks to be honest.
