Citalopram

Hi, my daughter is 16 and after complication with fluoxetine has now been prescribed citalopram, which reading the instructions and looking online aren't recommended for use under 18. CAHMS attitude is take it and to be honest not interested in her concerns and the dr roughly the same. She has Aspergers which was eventually diagnosed last year and has high anxiety issues. Has anyone else under 18 been prescribed this medication and how have they got on with it as I'm at my wits end worrying about it?

  • I don't have the experience you ask about, but notice the information states that a doctor may prescribe to under 18s if they think it is their best interests, and to watch for side effects. So maybe a judgement on best interest had been made due to fluoxetine not being suitable. By doing some reading I am guessing you are now sufficiently aware of potential side effects, which you can monitor and contact the GP if they are arise or worsen, or if the medication is making no difference to your daughter's health. Reading any it repeatedly could be fuelling your worries, and others' experiences will not be a predictor of the outcome for your daughter.

The GP is there if needed, and anyway I think a review after starting on a new medication is at least a good idea, possibly even something that is routinely provided. I hope things improve, both for your daughter and for you as a worried mum.
