would like to know how to get Drs to take my concerns about 7 yr old seriously, ongoing since a baby

Hi,

we are having an appointment with the paediatrician tomorrow and I am desperate to make sure I am not fobbed off again. My son has had difficulties since a baby and we have had various appointments since his playschool first referred us to the paediatrician nearly 6 years ago now. Every appointment we have had has been so disappointing as we seem to get nowhere and sent off on our way. My son is in his second school since playschool and both other schools have felt there is an underlying issue aswell.  I am worried the longer he is left without the right support the harder it will be for him to get through school and life in general. The last appointment we had we were told because he could make eye contact and laugh at a joke, he was definitely not on the spectrum. My son has lots of sensory issues with food, clothes, noises, being touched. Has always had extrmely violent angry outbursts when he gets distressed and finds it hard to express his emotions properly. He hates being cuddled or kissed and avoids physical contact. He needs a lot of direction and finds it hard to think for himself, and struggles with school. He prefers to be at home where is in his comfort zone and is obsessed with the computer, he doesn't stop talking about it. It's hard to get him to focus on anything else or find interest in anything else. He hasn't got a friendship group at school but is luckily liked by his peers at his new school as his teacher says. He was bullied at his last school which was horrible for him. He suffers with chronic constipation which I have been told digestive problems can be related to autism. There are so many things I could write that I feel he finds difficult or does not do in the same way my other two children do, and to me it's obvious there is something amiss. The senco at school have a provision map for him and he goes to social communication groups, but he still isn't getting the support with the emotional and sensory things that distress him because he has no diagnosis for the school to be making sure they are providing all the support they should be.

how do i make sure we aren't just sent away again for another appointment in 6 months? Something needs to be done, he is in year 3 now but I am dreading when he has to go to secondary school, I don't know how he will cope if his needs are being ignored now and could still be then.

  • Hi you don't say how many appointments you have had, but no matter, you have a number of options 1) You can ask for a second opinion/referral to CAMHS and or go to see your GP/ Health Visitor and request the same 2) keep a diary of your concerns and your son's behaviour/issues 3) request a further meeting with your son's current school SENCO to discuss your concerns 4) check out your local council website to find out about the local offer 5) contact the local autism support group 6) contact Occupational Health re sensory issues 6) you can self refer to Social Services, you don't need a diagnosis to do that, 7) contact a local carers support centre

We didn't have  a diagnosis for several years, because there was more than one condition masking it. Suggest you print out your post on here and hand it to your consultant- does your consultant have a specialism in diagnosing Autism? if not request to see one that does?

Request a referral to the Educational Physcologists, if school won't refer, you can self refer

Is there a schools autism support service? if so then request info and a meeting with them
