Undiagnosed Mental Health

Don't know if this is in the right section but I was wondering what the extent is of undiagnosed mental health is in the UK. Whole sections of society operating "normally" but really with varying degreess of mental health issues completely missed because of their age group or even very mild forms of mental health issues. Any thoughts.

  • While autism may be accompanied by mental health issues, either comorbid or consequent of trying to live with autism, autism is not itself a mental health condition. So possibly inappropriate to ask this question on here. People may be offended.

Autism is about cognitive difficulties, more akin to being blind or deaf. People on the spectrum have difficulty processing information received. They have difficulties engaging socially, and isolation exacerbates the situation. But it is not, in itself, a mental health condition.

It is true though that a lot of people are undiagnosed autistic spectrum including many adults. Often they are diagnosed with a mental health condition without the professionals identifying autism as a factor. A good few are treated for many years for a mental health condition with adverse consequences for their autism.

Can I ask, are you poosting this request as part of an undergraduate research project or as commercial research? There are proper channels if this is the case. There is a forum for autism professionals run by NAS that might be a better place to ask (contact NAS Moderators), but again be cautious about identifying autism as mental health.
