Teeth grinding

Hello,

my son has recently been diagnosed with autism. He is 7. He has been grinding his teeth in his sleep since he was very little. The dentist assured me he would grow out of it (pre-diagnosis) but he now has some of his big teeth and I am really worried about him doing permanent damage.

Does anyone have experience of this/any tips on how to help him? I was told by our dentist that he is too young for night mouth guards because he is growing still and his adult teeth are still coming through so a guard could be damaging.

Thank you

  • Am 47 and still grind my teeth. My dentist suggested a teeth gum guard to wear at night but hated the idea of it as such so never went further.  My teeth are reasonably healthy.  I am lucky in that I don't share my life with anyone ie, don't have a partner so they don't share a bed/bedroom with me. It may be more difficult if had.  I could see he might have problems there when he is older.  I don't know if dentists make teeth guards for children but might be worthwhile for that reason as if he learns to sleep with it from a young age then he accept it easier may be.....
