Concessionary Bus Pass Assessment

Hi there.

I might get a better response on this bit of the forum, I wasn't getting any replies on the General Chat section.

Basically, last Wednesday (2nd) I went for a Bus Pass Assessment at a local GP surgery (Not my own) and I applied for the pass on the following grounds:

  • Aspergers
  • Anxiety/Depression

Well I took in a letter from the doctor which states I can't drive and what medication I'm on. I also took in a letter from my care worker at the hospital under the Aspergers team.
I'm rather confused about the assessment, it lasted just 5 minutes if that. The doctor asked me what schools I went to and what I'm currently doing. He also asked what my health problems are, and he sent us on our way. I don't know what to think really, it's a waiting game because now I have to wait for the post, and the card would arrive attached to a letter (If I get it). Can someone give me their experiences? The assessment was rather short.
Thanks!!
Daniel.
  • I do have one but didn't reply as I did not have to have an assessment to get it.  I lost my driving licence for a period of time due to very severe depression and anxiety and so got a bus pass under the criterion of  not being able to drive due to a medical condition.  My care coordinator (CMHT) completed the form for me and I just handed it in at the council offices.  I now have my driving licence back (although on a 1-year renewal) but use the bus pass a lot as I have a lot of anxieties about driving and also am unable to at times when my depression/anxiety flares up or due to medication changes.

  • Which form needs stamping Asparagus?

I'm just waiting now for a response, a letter through the door. My doctor stamped a letter he typed up for me to give to them at the assessment centre.

  • I have one and just take the form to the Dr to stamp and sign and hand it back to the transport office and was about two weeks to wait. They didn't have to explain why they signed it. Just signed and the practice stamp. Quite a painless procedure for government things really.

It did go wrong at the beginning when needed to renew the pass as the transport office gave me the wrong form. They could see I wasn't needed an older person pass so gave me a disability form. Someone told me I needed an appointment at council offices to prove i was disabled and needed a letter from the GP. The GP wouldnt sign the form and the practice was as confused as I was because it wasn't the usual form. No wonder when it wasn't the right form in the first place. But once had the right form they willingly signed it.

  • I read through the criteria to get one. My doctor at the hospital told me I should apply for one as with my anxiety and autism it'd help me get around more independantly, my mum is my carer.

I just have to wait now, if they refuse me I've got to get a certificate stating I can't drive.

  • I wonder if many people with autism claim a concessionary bus pass.

There is a section on this on the NAS web pages - under "Living with Autism" - "benefits and community care" (not where I'd have thought of looking for it).

I've read through this several times, and it seems you've got to have a learning disability. Which given you have Aspergers might be taken to mean you haven't. But then it says the definition of learning disability is very broad......................................

The lack of replies suggests no-one currently logging on has tried to get one. I suspect its a buit like a blue badge. People with autism are supposedly entitled to one, but I don't know many that have one ..... probably because it is too complicated to determine if you fit the criteria.
