Recently Diagnosed

Hi,

Our 3 year old son was diagnosed Autistic on Monday. I have suspected this for a long time but whilst I felt glad that it had been confirmed, It also felt like a massive shock! Once the doctors had given the diagnosis, We were handed some leaflets and told a report would be sent to us. I now have the feeling of being left in the lurch. So we have the diagnosis, now what? We both feel completely overwhelmed and at the same time lost.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions that could help please?

Many Thanks

  • My 3 year old daughter was diagnosed last week and the 1st thing we were told was we could now claim for dla! I didn't really know what to expect after the diagnosis, but we've got a follow up appointment for her which is in June next year. We (me and my partner) knew it was coming, it wasn't a massive shock when they told us she had autism we had seen the signs for a while, no eye contact, random outbursts of laughter and crying, not really socialising with other kids at parties, soft play etc. The North East Special Needs Network (were from Newcastle) are excellent for advice, etc. As a dad of a recently diagnosed child it is daunting but there's lots of help and advice out there.

    Hi and Welcome!

You aren't the first person to ask this question so you are not alone! Have a look through some of the threads returned by this search

community.autism.org.uk/.../"recently diagnosed" (Note use of quotes in the search to make this work)

Where people have discussed this situation. Some of it won't be directly relevant as many of the people will be adults and we are all different but I'm sure you will find something that will help.

I hope other parents will come along and chip in to this thread too.
