Our day finally came!

This morning my son and I went to a meeting which would prove to be a very positive experience for us.  My son has ASD and I am proud to say it!!  He is a fantastic little chap, always polite and eager to chat.  I won't get to know a great deal until we get the report in a few days/weeks, but it all seems like we have a direction to move towards now.

I understand he has Aspergers however, this is not a relevant term anymore and will be phased out over the next few months....?

Things are going to get better for my son now, I just can feel it, lots of support if we need it and I will be taking it with both hands.

  • People with Aspergers are more self-aware, chatty, socially outgoing and motivated than those with High Functioning Autism, of which Asperger is a type. This is my own understanding of AS, although AS can be complicated by other mental health conditions like OCD, depression, paranoia etc which can muddy the picture.

I know some people who have been diagnosed with HFA and they tend to have  speech abnormalities, and are less social than the  people with AS that I know.

Asperger as a label should be kept because we are different to other autistic people. I always tell people that I have Aspergers; I never introduce myself by telling them  I have autism because while AS is a type of autism, it is so different to other autistic conditions that it deserves recognition in its own right.
