severe eating problems coming to a head...

My son is 9 and since his diagnosis around 5 years ago has had a very limited diet of basically bread products, so he'll eat asian flatbreads, garlic bread etc..had doughnuts when he was younger, and he likes dry baguettes from the big supermarkets, typically 'skinning' them and discarding the rest..liquid intake is veerrry limited and only and exclusively 'coke' he'll go through around 20 tins a day..but total amount consumed will be around 2 tins in a day..the rest is discarded,..my immediate concern is how the heck can i administer something for his extreme constipation and associated health problems, he wont ever take any medication and the lst 3 days has been unbearable for me to watch him keeling over in pain...im feeling very lonely in a cruel world..    ,  realistic help, and i use that word loosely, i have never had,ALL the agencies and red tape organisations i have come accross in my 5 years of struggling to get my son relevant help- have been useless       so i ask....CAN ANYONE HELP ME?

  • My son has always refused medication. When he was little I ended up giving him paracetamol in suppositories - it is very common in France but not here.

He now will take Calpol fast melts as he can chew them.

My point is that perhaps you could discuss with your GP if there is any other way of administering the medicine.

  • Hi

I am so sorry that you are going through such a tough time at the moment.  There are so many of us who can totally understand how you are feeling at the moment and how tough it is.

I have posted a link below for the area of the NAS site that has advice about diet.

    http://www.autism.org.uk/Living-with-autism/Understanding-behaviour/Dietary-management-for-children-and-adolescents/Dietary-management-restricted-diet.aspx

On a personal note, it is important that you look after yourself as well.  You need to be strong for your child and therefore you need to be strong yourself.  You understandably are under huge stress and are dealing with all this with very little support from the various agencies.  Please look after yourself.

I hope the advice you get helps and please let know how you are doing.

  • Hi, yes, its the most trying thing in my life...but what makes it unbearable, is the fact hes not verbalising, and in pain, and  wont/cant take any medication or water at all!!..dietician-phuh! i saw her at the local hospital over 1 year ago, she gave me a weekly diary to fill out with his weeks intake and return to her, i did-and didnt hear anything else...when i mentioned this to my sons social worker, she told me to 'chase it up' which i will, but what is her job then?? i am too stressed and feel , as bilbo baggins put it, in 'LORD OF THE RINGS' 'like too little butter scraped on to toast! on the verge of self-imploding...
