Paradoxical drug reactions

I don't know is this is autism-related or not, except I'm told that Aspie brains have some slight differences from NT brains..

I am on meds for hypertension - beta-blockers and calcium-channel blockers. This is not at all unusual. The problem is that most beta-blockers give me migraine, though they are usually used for *treating* the condition (my elder son is on propanolol for his).

My migraines are acephalgic, that is, I only get the aura, no headache. For years, I had them very infrequently indeed - about once or twice every ten years, from the age of about 9. Then my GP started me on beta-blockers (atenolol), and suddenly I was getting migraines 2 or 3 times a week, which was silly!

I wasn't on BBs for long as the GP wanted me on ACE inhibitors (I was over 55). I tried those for a bit but they made me cough. So he tried various other meds, all of which gave me problems of one sort or another, finally in desperation tried me on bisoprolol (another bb) - and I had a migraine within 2 hours of taking the first pill. So he put me on celiprolol (a 3rd bb!), which was better - I'm OK as long as I avoid bacon, or at least eat only organic bacon. I never had problems with bacon or ham before.

I'm asking because I've not heard, anywhere, of beta-blockers causing migraines in other people. A web search hasn't turned up anything. I'm not entirely sure that my GP believes that's what's happening, and it's a difficult thing to prove.

  • I am the sister to a woman diagnosed as schizophrenia, but I suspect that a better diagnosis would have been severe autism.

I noticed your letter when I looked up paradoxical drug reactions.

Some years ago I mentioned my paradoxic and hyper drug responses to a doctor and suggested a genetic link to my sister's issues.  He assumed I was crazy.

Now, I have seen some of the more recent research that relatives are likely to carry some of these same sensitivities and paradoxic drug responses and brain "abnormailities."

I received a Federal Research Grant in Genetics at the age of 13 and have an IQ score of 184.  I have trouble with face recognition.  And, have almost savant levels of math skills.  I see the genetic links as well as have read about them.
