As I understand it, a test such as ADOS will show whether an individual has got an autistic spectrum disorder. Having an ASD is a bit like having a broken leg or being pregnant - you either have the condition or you don't - you can't have half a broken leg or be half pregnant. The difficulties that an individual has are then determined by whether the person also has other conditions e.g. low intelligence or sensory issues. ASD people often struggle to show their intelligence - your son may not co-operate with the testing process and may score badly in a test but it doesn't necessarily mean that he is not intelligent.

Have you got him on a good clean diet that is free of orange colour additives etc? Some ASD people are extra sensitive to the food they eat and can benefit from changing the things they eat. Have a look at fedup.com.au/.../introduction-to-food-intolerance-3

  • Camhs have been helping for a year with my six year old boy has he will not go to school, there said theres enough evidence that he has autism ,but think he wouldnt cope with a ados has hes got really bad challenging behaviour&

  • Can you be more specific. Have Camh's diagnosed 'Traits' as oposed to ASD? or do you mean you haven't gone through the normal process of assessment?

I've spoken to a couple recently who have been fobbed off with 'Traits' and told to self refer to local hubs. Very unacceptable.
