Seeking (psychological) support for child whilst waiting for assessment.

Our son is in Year 5 and has been on the waiting list for his ASD Multi-disciplinary Assessment for 17 months so far.  He has Aspergers (we, and the consultant, are 100% certain of that) and is increasingly struggling socially at school.  When we saw the consultant she advised us not to use the terms Aspergers/Autism with our son until it was all 'official' and we would be entitled to some support with this.  We talk to him ourselves about differenes/strengths/etc. but we don't feel we can keep doing this just ourselves. We are at a point now where our son is often saying things like "why am I like this?" and "I don't want to be this person." and we are in need of support to deal with it. We've followed as much online advice as we can from NAS, school and other parents as to what to say but feel that he needs more professional help, especially as bouts of depression are becoming more frequent and obvious.
Does anyone know if this kind of support/counselling exists for children/parents please?  If so, is it possible to access it before the official diagnosis is through?
Thank you.
