advice on expanding diet

I have a very limited diet due to autism and trauma. Even as a baby when i switched from milk to solid food i would spit everything else. Growing up feeding difficulties were met with violence. Now im 24 abd very embarrassed about my inability to eat most foods. I was wondering if people had advice on how to expand my range of acceptable foods

  • Hello Mnjesse.

There is no reason to feel embarrassed -  you will have your reasons to be restrictive, where in fact, many autistic people find themselves limited in dietary options - this is not acting difficult, in the slightest.

While I can see that our community is starting to provide fantastic feedback, I wonder if the following NAS resource would be useful:

Eating - a guide for all audiences

I wish you the best in finding the means to expand your diet.

    Thanks - Zac Mod.

  • I'd try grazing, just have a mouthful of foods you would normally reject and just try them without putting pressure on yourself. Note what makes them acceptable or not in terms of taste and texture.

I'd recomend getting counselling for having been treated with violence, if you've not already

  • Hello,

Thank you for your interesting question. It would be really helpful to know how you define an acceptable food. What sort of foods do find acceptable or possibly enjoyable?

There are quite a few foods that I do not eat. Usually, this is because of the texture, flavour or the level of spiciness, salt. acidity, etc.
