A moving series of 5 documentaries about sex change [male to female] - warning contains difficult content

Warning - this is a very emotional series and shows sex change operations.

I was looking for something to watch on i-player and unexpectedly came across this very moving series, ' A Change of Sex' about Julia Grant's [RIP] journey to find her identity; from a difficult childhood in which, as George, she had to care for her siblings. I watched all 5 in one go, as it was so rivetting. I thought it might be inspiring for anyone struggling with sexual identity. I knew very little of this subject but feel better informed, thanks to Julia's brave disclosures. The attitude of her first psychiatrist is shocking!

  • A very good friend of mine is going through the male to female transition at present and Ive other acquaintances in this community. I think the documentary you refer to is quite old and a lot has changed, some things for the better, some for the worse. Waiting lists have doubled in time, then doubled again. Then prejudice sadly will never go away,  plus it has become a political football but one in which the trans folk themselves are not included in the game. The hatred out there to the trans community is intense and incomprehensible.

There is a stong statistical link between neurodiversity and autism. Check out the book Uncomfortable Labels by Laura Kate Dale, it is very well written and contemporary in its information, though it doesnt represent everyone’s experiences in the trans community.
