speech therapy assessment help im panicking

Hi , my 4 year old twins ar going for a speech therapy assessment on thursday and i am in a bit of a panic !!!! ..one of them has already has been assessed by a community paed and she has diagnosed adhd/autism ? her conclusion was that she would bet her career on my son as being asd . he has very good verbal skills but since then i have picked up other communication problems such as taking every word literal , not understanding instructions at all , very little eye contact ( but he can do this when he chooses ) , he doesnt understand friendships etc ..he also shows many of other asd traits , but can hold himself together to a certain extent in school so he is in mainstream . He is also pretty good at masking these by mimicking his peers . but my main concern that this wont be picked up on at assessment . i have an older daughter who has struggled for all her 12 years socially and his never been diagnosed as she is also a very good mimicker bt i dont want my son to go through this . Its not that i want him labelled but i do want to make sure that he gets all the help that he so obviously needs . has anyone else gone through this .. our other twin has noticible speech problems which are much easier picked up on .. am i being irrational ..who knows can anyone help

  • Hello there,

Best wishes for your assessment. Rather like your concerns I too was a little worried that my daughter's language difficulties may be missed at an assessment as if anything she speaks too well BUT the therapist was great and knew just what she was looking for.

As you say rather than a lack of language it was the TYPE of language, tone, volume, understanding, explanations, over formal language, literal language etc etc sometimes even when subtle that she was able to assess.

When my daughter was 2/3 we were told by a GP "nope definitely not autism as she speaks so well and ALL children with autism have delayed speech difficulties"!!! thank fully we now know very different.

Our experience was very positive with speech and lang and so do hope yours will be likewise. Best wishes x
