medication

Hi everyone I am new to the forum so sorry if this is not in the right topic Undecided

I am looking for some advice, I have a 10 year old daughter on the spectrum ( my world ) . Has within the last 3 months become agressive , hits out , hits herself, throws things, stomps about screams and generally gets herself into an awful state.

These tantrums can happen in a split second, main time it happens is when I brush her hair so sensory overload i know but it has got worse , she is unable to do it herself. Other times could just be random if we say no to having more food etc she hits and sticks her nails into me.

When she is not having these hard times she goes back to being a loving little girl that shows great empathy to other, she does say sorry but when i ask her why she does it she says because I miss you ( I work part time evenings).

I have an appointment with a peadatrician on Tuesday this week to discuss options I am loathed to go down the medication route but do appreciate that it is something I might have to try. Presently she is on 6mg melatonin at night as restless sleeper this has helped a good it.

I worry about her because she is going into p7 in a new school and this is a school that caters for more moderate/severe , so she is in the right place, however she is very hyperactive jumps from morning to night , always has her head buried in a laptop , and nearly shows signs of withdrawal when I try and limit time on it.

We are an active family and always out and about but she loves to get home for computer time.  She can not stay on an activity for any length of time and is so easily distracted or wonders off into her own wee world .

Any advice would be greatly appreciated for this stressed mum xx

  • Hi Dor and thanks for your reply :)

We have a good de tangler but most try it in bath we normally use it after bath she cant tolerate shower because of the sensory issues, i normally smother hair in conditioner then rinse and off we go to brush but it can be a nightmare.

Thanks short hair may be an option but i love her long hair and we just managed to get a few inches off it , thanks to my auntie as she also hates going to hairdressers and has had awful meltdowns previously hitting the hairdresser :(

Off to the peadatrican tmr so will see how we go  thanks x

  • I don't know about the medication but have you tried brushing her hair with one of those soft -no tangle brushes or a wide comb when the hair is wet and slathered with conditioner?  Anything that has no chance at all to trap the hair would work.

Then you just rinse out her hair and it will be brushed.   We used to do this with 'NT'-sensory-daughter and it worked really well.   She also could comb it in the shower herself.

The downside is that she wouldn't brush her hair between showers, but that was just something we had to live with and it never got that bad.   Eventually she decided on a really short hair style and the hair brushing woes went away ...

    Hang in there!
