Toilet training our son

Morning,

I am new here and just looking for some advice from others who are in our situation and may understand.

Our little boy is turning 6 shortly, and we are at our whits end trying to initiate potty training.

He has sensory processing issues alongside his autism, so trying to navigate a wet or dirty nappy and break the cycle/introduce toileting on a potty or toilet is becoming increasingly difficult.

Has anyone who has been in a similar position got any advice or tips on how to introduce potty training successfully?

I appreciate this is a time thing and won’t happen overnight, but we have attempted to leave his nappy off for longer periods of time, but he will just hold onto this and ultimately have an accident.

We have introduced a removable toilet seat and have gradually sat him on this to show him this is where he is to toilet, and have done nappy changes in the toilet for a while now. None of this seems to have a positive impact so we are struggling.

As I say, any advice or tips from anyone who has been in a similar position would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance x

    1. 4.5 years and nothing. Can definitely hold, but won't do it until there's a nappy. Doesn't help that we're unable to provide consistency, as nursery doesn't have time to jump around each child in their care; a relative, who does have kid for a couple of hours every couple of weeks, does not have space for kids toilet seat or ability to climb stairs swiftly.

Last year I've spent six weeks summer holiday hawking for hours through the whole day the moment I can quickly pop kid onto potty - only to come back to an accident after I run to the bathroom myself.

The advices on websites to 'potty train autistic children before age of two' don't help either - for a start you have to know your child is autistic before the age of two.

Rewards don't work either for us, not only for toileting, but anything at all. Also, the child is non-verbal with no understanding of speech.

Tried even cutting up nappies in strategic places and organising daily activities in close proximity to the toilet, but there's no 'I need toilet' indication from the child.

Putting up laminated pictogram sheets and carrying the keyring with individual ones to swiftly point at an image didn't help either.

If I ever find a method that works, I'll share.
