Melatonin for sleep problems

We have just been informed that our GP can no longer prescribe melatonin as it is now classified as a 'Red' drug and can only be prescribed by a hospital consultant.  It is interesting how this coincides with the research recently completed for Research Autism by Keele University mentioning investigations using melatonin for people with a faulty circadian rhythm.  As a parent of a 32 year old daughter with exactly this problem I am now loathe to buy melatonin off the internet (as suggested by her GP!) as cannot guarantee the source.  We are now awaiting a response from her hospital consultant.  I am sure that there will be other parents in the same position.  My daughter now cannot rise before midday and says that half her life is gone because of the sleep problem.

Is there anyone else out there in a similar position?

  • Thamk you to everyone who has answered so far.  The hospital consultant is based at a hospital a long way from where we live, so yes we are having to wait for letters to go back and forth.  Also, as we have not seen the consultant in 6 years assume we may have to have a review before he will prescribe.  It has been helpful to hear of other people's experiences.
