"Just an old wives tale" or a type of mental conditioning.

When someone says dont eat cheese at night and another person replies that's just an old wives tale it isn't true, the reason is that if you eat dairy and most people benefit from having dairy in their diet you also need to eat fruit and foods containing malic acid apples are a very good part of diet and high in malic acid and best eaten after you're evening meal for various reason and its also best to seperate apples from any foods that are high in dairy. It's more than likley that old wives tales were spoken rules and guides to help people in their lives but poor people who are or were unable to follow the rules of diet and especially during wartime rashioning would use the lie that "they're just old wives tales" and with make do and mend being a political agenda during wartime Britain it became encouraged and accepted as a type of bade of honnor and people were re-educated which has led to mass confusion over the generations as to what is good dietary advice and what actually works for the brain and body. One of the reasons why people struggle so much with diet is because we as a nation are blinkered by pride, attemting to pay respect by recreating the suffering of thoes that came before us and had no other option, they would turn in their graves to see people punished and made to feel weak and ashamed for attemting to look after their own health and welbeing with good and proper diet and lifestyle.

See i knew i wasn't stupid, well not like a brushes daft anyway...although sometimes i do struggle to get a handle on things "yo lips whats the take on these new fangled daft excluders"

  • Interesting!

I am in no way a nutritional expert, but I had read somewhere that having a good portion of protein before bed helps with sleep?

  • Try eating three appropriate portioned meals per day (see get portion wise downloadable pdf for guidence) eat your evening meal no later than 18:00 six o clock make surre it has no or very small amounts of dairy eat an apple afterwards and shortly before sleep eat one or two slices of toasted whit bread with a glass of semi skimmed milk wheat helps sleep white bread is quickly absorbed and a glass of milk containes enough protine for sleep.

  • later on in life lactose intolerance can be identified using a breath test which tests for carbon monoxide levels in the breath

Just to clarify, it is hydrogen they test for:

    https://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/hydrogen-breath-test

if you smoke or vape as an adult you can not be tested for lactose intolerance as the carbon monoxide levels on the breath would mask any results and provide misleading information rendering the test useles

I checked a range of websites from reputable medical authorities and they talk about not chewing gum, being aware of any lung or heart conditions that may make the process difficult and not to do it if you have recently had a colonoscopy, but no mention that smoking is a consideration.

Since they are testing for hydrogen, the concerns over carbon dioxide or monoxide are moot points.

It's good they can test fairly easily although the process is time consuming and may have bathroom side effects if you are actually intolerant to the lactose solution they give you.

I would hope they supply an Immodium type medication to help stop this after the event if you need it.

  • Most people are tested by the nurse that visits when you are a new born i think thats as far as lactose and wheat anyway or its identified very quickly when food is introduced, but later on in life lactose intolerance can be identified using a breath test which tests for carbon monoxide levels in the breath its also used in smoking cessation to see if the person has stopped or cut down on smoking, so if you smoke or vape as an adult you can not be tested for lactose intolerance as the carbon monoxide levels on the breath would mask any results and provide misleading information rendering the test useless. Ask your GP to look back through your records and see what was identified when you were a baby.

  • Most docotors I've met have no idea about diet, I think they have an afternoons training on it at medical school. There's a massive shortage of allergy specialists, so people aren't being seen or assessed let alone being given appropriate advice. I've learnt more from womens magazines on diet, allergies, intolerances and how and what to avoid and what to take instead than I have from any doctor. I can't eat meat or fish as it gives really bad IBS, I just don't seem able to digest the stuff, I've also become lactose intolerant over the last 20 or so years, when I was in hospital, I was told I couldn't have a vegan diet as you had to have it Ok'd by a nutritionalist and there weren't any available, I lived on toast and marmite for 10 days as everything else made me sick, the nurses were going mental as they were afraid I'd bust my stitches open. I was lucky enough to see an Indian doctor who discharged me so as I could go home and eat properly, she said it was a common problem, people not being able to tolerate the food and being sick.

A lot of dieticians and nutritionalists seem to have eating disorders, why on earth would I trust someone who can't eat properly themselves to give me good advice?

When I worked in a wholefood shop, we had loads of people come to us after being given a diagnosis of wheat or dairy intolerance, most were from one particular doctor, who did no tests or anything, anyone who had a digestive complaint was told not to eat wheat or dairy and to come to us. Most of those people were terrified, they'd just been given life changing information from a doctor, who sent them to shop assistants for advice, we might of been well trained and knowlegable shop assistants, but we weren't qualified to give that sort of help.

SO NO, MANY PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY SHOULD OR SHOULD NOT EAT, BECAUSE THE ADVICE THEY'RE GIVEN IS EITHER VAGUE OR NON EXISTANT.

  • I really appreciate you sharing your experience

It sounds like you’ve had to deal with a lot.

It’s so important to find what’s right and safe for your own health

  • Oh right, i have serious life threatening health conditions and i have no choice. Fasting as far as im aware is something that is known to be very bad for many reasons can and does contribute to infertility and type two diabitese which is a devistating and extreamly limiting health condition to develop and to manage type two diabetese well takes dedication high leve of personal intreligence and resiliance as well as being lucky enough for there to be a Dr involved with your care who is just if not more dedicated than you must be and thats not something that can ever be garunteed, skipping one meal every now and then if you're not hungry or if its unavoidable is not that bad, i don't practice fasting.

  • Wow, that's a lot of information!!

I do eat healthily and usually only eat within an 8 hour window, but I am not strict  with this. I do believe fasting has benefits.

I understand what you are saying about alcohol and caffeine, but I tend to swing towards moderation being key to enjoyment of life's little pleasures.

  • Well thats the thing isn't it, you simply can not change biology and that the cercadian rythm work in line with the rising and falling of the sun, time is a measurment and man made concept and to measure and organise is a very important thing for the human race, it was sun diles that were used to measure time and provide structure to the days before mechanical clock and before sun diles it was sticks in the ground, all of thoes innovations were no ever a attemp to change reality but to make life easier and allow us to organise so we can plan be prepared to eat at the correct time move and travel safely and prepare for sleep ahead of when the night time will arrive,

I hope that you can find a way that is good for youi, over the years i have suffere a great deal with sleep issues and i do understand the importance and gravity of my own situation, i experienced a bout of insomnia some years ago and could only sleep one out of every three days i now sleep every night and i take my health very seriously because insomnia is not something people live with its something people die from

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Eating before 6 pm is going to be difficult for me because of work.

  • eat your evening meal no later than 18:00 six o clock

In the working world this is rarely an option.

Many people finish at around 6pm and still have an hour plus commute to get home, catch up with any family / pets etc then can start prep so mealtimes tend to be closer to 20.00

I know this isn't optimal but for many millions of people who work in cities they need advice more tailored to their situations.

    white bread is quickly absorbed

The most common type of white bread in the UK is supermarket bread that isn't actually very good for you:

By the way you make a lot of health statements about food so can you tell us your credentials for making these claims please? Do you have a degree in nutrition etc?
