Is there any side effects to Rispiridone

Hello everyone. Bit of a long story, my son is now 22 and was diagnosed with aspergers syndrome aged 9. He was put on 1/2mg of rispiridone once a day at the age of 15 by cahms and at 16 cahms signed him off as he was no longer in school. He saw the mental health people twice at age 18 and 19 then they told me they were signing him off as autism is a mental disability not a mental health issue and when I asked who he should see considering he was on psych meds, I was told he would be reffered by his gp to the right people. 2 gps later and still no joy. Every so often he will go to the gp and say his meds aren't working anymore so can they raise the dose which they do and he's now on 3mg twice a day. For the last 18 months he's been fainting and he's been to outpatients for every xray, scan and trace known to man and all they can come up with is that every so often for no apparent reason his heart goes too fast so he faints. He can be completley out for anything up to 30-40 minutes. Is it possible that it may be a side effect of the rispiridone? Thanks in advance for any advice as I'm totally clueless on this one and even the hospital are baffled

  • Hi - sounds like the so-called adult "services" have let you both down badly.  I presume you've read the leaflet that comes with the tablets to check out if fainting is a contra-indication?  Whether it is or isn't I strongly feel you need to push this with the medical profession + also your sw if you have 1.  Whilst you may feel a bit reassured from what A + E are saying, (perhaps??), I think there's unfinished business here.  I would ask your GP to refer you to a cardiologist.  I wd also ask for a referral to a Psychiatrist who shd know about risperidone + whether his meds need adjusting or even changing.  Really really dig your heels in until you get what you want. Whether the "faints" are caused by risperidone or not, things still need looking into.  Fainting, or whatever it is, should be investigated until an answer is found. You cd check out Research Autism's website.  They will have info there about the pros + cons of that drug, amongst many others.  Gd luck.
