how to access private diagnosis for adult

There is a long and arduous tale about trying to get an assessment funded on the NHS that I won't go into in any depth, sufice to say that over a year after first asked my GP we are firmly at step -1.

I've tried to look for information on private diagnosis's (sp?) for adults to consider all options, but can't actually find any info (visual/info processing ability seams to be taking a holiday atm, what can you do?).

Is there a good place to start looking/reading? Any advice or tips?

thanks in advance

I've just gone down some of this route. I went to the GP and said I thought I had Aspergers and explained my situation. GP didn't argue and listened attentively but then said that the NHS waiting list is 12 months or so. She then offerred a private referral and I ended up seeing a consultant psychiatrist at the local private hospital.

I think it is s$%t that it doesn't seem possible to get this on the NHS but that's another issue for another day.

For £1000 I got an assessment and now have the diagnosis letter that my employer needed to stop the disciplinary process. It's expensive but it can be useful!

I haven't had any follow up treatment or counselling and I think you have to go into diagnosis without thinking that it will fix everything. The world will be the same ASD hostile place that it was before but you should be able to understand it better and be better at playing its game. Does that make sense?

  • Hi there

I am having the same issue my son is 23 this year and trying to get him diagnosed is really bad in kent as we recently moved here. apparently there is a 3 year waiting list at this hospital in sevenoaks through the NHS, we know dont know if we have a social worker from the disability team anymore and where we originally came from have had one since he was 7 . The thing is I have just found out that if you go private they don't accept you or the diagnoses and disreguard it . Its a no win situation

  • Hi Cuttlefish,

I've very little knowledge of adult assessment, but i've just seen this posted on another forum. See if it's of some help.
