Diagnosis For Our 5 Year Old Son What To Expect

Hi Everyone first post to the forum and the community Smile

Ill try and keep this short but any advice would be appreciated..

At quite an early age our son always seemed a bit "different" but as he was our first well we did not know what to expect.

When he started nursery at 3  within the first few weeks we were told he was showing autistic signs.  We had a supportive nursery and he had an IEP drawn up and had SENCO involved.  We were also reffered to our local childrens centre for assessment.

He had an observation at 3 and although we were told he was showing some signs there was no cause for concern at the time because of his age but to return after he started school.

Within the first few weeks of School we were once again pulled to the side to be told he was showing signs of autism.  We had another appointment with our local children's centre to discuss the issues at hand.

This is where we are now.  The doctor has suggested a diagnosis of Aspergers / high functioning autism dependent on the outcome of some questionnaires.??

We have had to fill in a tick box questionnaire "does he do this and that"

The School have had the same questionnaire which they have also filled in with a side report on his difficulties.

The CAT (communication and autism team) have also sent a report.

In the meantime he also has had an occupational thearpist assesment as he struggles with his motor skills in which they have sent a report.

Finally my question.  What next? We have had another appointment through for the doctor but she said not to bring our son as we have to complete a digital questionnaire??? does anybody have any experience with this? as I'm getting the impression that the diagnosis will be decided from it's results.

Thanks In Advance.

  • Sounds like you are currently going through the 'screening' part of assessment. This process is designed to weed out children that may have issues but are not ASD.

Once screened, you then go to formal diagnosis assesment, but there can be quite a long wait.

We went through screening 18 months ago and have only just progressed to the next bit ..
