I really hate shaving! But hate the feeling of hairy legs

I just would like to ask women (and men) what they use to shave?

I really hate shaving but I need to shave because I don’t like the feel of hairs on my legs, which then it takes me a while in the shower. I have tried women’s razors 3 blades and above, I have tried men’s razors 3 blades and above, I have tried going with the way the hair goes (but ends up not smooth enough).
I would consider laser tools but unfortunately I have tattoo’s, I don’t really like the smell of creams either.

I have sensitive eczema skin and every time I shave throughout the years I end up with spotty/rashy legs (even if they are smooth). I just would like to have smooth clear of spots legs that I don’t need to shave Sob

Any ideas or recommendations? Thanks in advance x

  • Try Shea Butter, instead. The Body Shop has it.

Most over-the-counter hygiene products contain carcinogens.

  • I too dislike shaving so usually wear a beard. Luckily it is rather thick, and often when I'm out and about I hear guys calling out "Great beard mate!"  It is silver grey and has been known to reach over 17 inches, but is only about six inches at present as any longer can get a bit difficult to live with.

Before I became bearded, I usually wet shaved as electric razors just don't cut close enough and can leave a nasty rash.

  • I used to shave my legs, but now I don't bother, I'm not that hairy and I don't wear anything were my legs will be show. I did try creams but my hair is to strong and instead of falling off my hair went bright ginger, real Prince Harry ginger. I used to use sugaring as opposed to waxing, but I don't know of anywhere that does it now.

There are waxes for sensitive skin and creams too, if it's facial hair you want rid of, go for special facial depilatory creams, you can get these in Afro-Carribean shops and hairdressers as well as online. Apparently lots of Afro-Carribean men prefer creams as shaving can encourage ingrown hairs due to the curl.

I've never found a good razer, either the ones that are sold to women or men, the cheap disopable ones are definately the worst, I either ended up with cuts and grazes, or spots and razor burn. When you shave you cut the hair at an angle which makes it appear thicker when it grows back and sharper because of the angle. Creams and waxes pull the hair out by the root, as do epilators, so when it grows back it will be fine and soft, they will also gradually damage the hair follicle and you will end up with less hair growth.

  • I don't like close shaves, so keep a few days stubble on my face. I don't like that it's gone patchy grey though, makes me look a lot older.

Close shaves make my skin itchy and I am really prone to getting nasty spots from hairs growing in if I do. The resulting over consciousness about how said spots look,  is too much for me.

I don't shave my legs, but I imagine it'd be best to just trim it really short to avoid rash and ingrowing from a clean shave. I guess it depends if the hair is think and whether it would become stubbly and irritating to you?

  • Ditto here mate. I hate shaving so much I leave my facial hair to grow but it irritates my skin as it grows. Either way I always end up with a red sore looking face. I have steroid cream that I apply when things are really bad. However, that feels greasy.

    I can't win.

Sorry ladies you have my empathy.

  • Only empathy.

I'm male with facial hair growth. I can't stand shaving and can't stand a beard - similar to you.

So what do I do? I shave once every week thus pleasing no one.

  • I only shave occasionally. The hair doesn't bother me because I always wear thick tights, leggings or trousers to hide a varicose vein now, so I don't notice it particularly.

However, when I used to shave legs and wax bikini line regularly I used a post shave soothing oil and followed up with an ingrown hair solution/gel. They seemed to help.

  • I understand the sensory issues with the hair and the creams etc. I also hate the relentless repetitiveness and effort of the task.

I have no idea whether this is helpful or not because I don't have eczema but I am prone to shaving bumps. I use the venus comfort glide razor that has built in gel. I don't find the smell or feel offensive and I can use it without any kind of shaving cream and get good results. Don't know whether you've already tried one like that or whether it would still be an issue with eczema but could be worth a try if you haven't already.

I'm not sure what else to suggest that Iain hasn't really although those options sound painful to me. The only other thing is looking into electrolysis as that's meant to be permanent but no one seems to do that where I live so I don't know how common it is.

  • If you rule out razors, creams and laser removal then I can only think of 3 other options:

1 - waxing. Probably not good with your eczema.

2 - electric razor. Will still leave very short hairs and you need to use a balm afterwards to avoid a rash with sensitive skin.

3 - epilators. A bit painful but the last option I can think of.

There is a useful review of epilators here if you are interested:
