My son had his MDA last month, hes coming up for 4yrs. We came away being told if it had been 6 months earlier they would have diagnosed him with ASD but he has made a lot of progress in the last year and has many positive traits/behaviours. This I don’t argue with. He is very jekyll and hyde but ticks all the boxes of autism.
They want to see how he fairs when he starts infant school in September. Hes been at preschool since he was 2.5yrs. They feel he will either be straightened out with the routine and structure or find taking direction too much.
After a week of letting this info sink in it suddenly occurred to me that he wont take “either” path he will take both as this is what he has been doing for the last year. The structure he has had at preschool is probably responsible for his improvements and progress but those typical underlying behaviours and social issues are still there.
Im not really sure what to do now. How do we say were not really happy with that outcome as we believe it’s a cop out and just procrastinating. Were not particularly happy with the assessment anyway. They missed out crucial info like the fact that I think my mother had autism and I have strong traits and they didn’t really bother looking at his motor skills which I feel are below average. A lot of the play they provided for him was things he does weekly in speech therapy so these weren’t true reflections of him. These were learned responses.
Any tips or advice?
