Finding the best(right) pyscologist in Cambridge for my son

Hi,

We are in the early stages of trying to get a diagnosis for my 11yr old son, for asberges.  He is based in Cambridge, which I have heard is a great area for pyscologists.  He has seen his doctor, also a therapist, and we have had a TAC meeting at the school.  I am very keen to get an assesment asap, as he goes to secondary school in September.  With the issue of speed, I am thinking of looking at a private assessment.

This is where my question lies.. how do I know which person to choose?  I have looked at the BPS site, seeing all the chartered pyscologists, but again, I feel a little lost.

Does anyone have any advice or experience?

Jo

  • It's a very individual thing.  The only way you will know is by thinking through the questions you or your son want answered/resolved to feel conmfortable and confident and call the psychologist up for a chat to ascertain whether they are right or not.  You could try Googling for reviews if there is such a thing for psychologists.  I would always ensure that your basic questions include are they qualified in assessing autism in children and how many years they have been practising, what their level experience of autism is, how many children they have assessed/diagnosed and whether their training is up-to-date.
