Potty training 5yo non verbal ASD

Hi all first time posters.

We have a 5 yo little boy who is non verbal ASD. We have recently started potty training.

The obstacle that has surfaced is that he will wee in his pants as if they are his nappy but will not wee in the toilet.

We have also discovered that if we leave him with nothing on he can control his weeing so that he will not go, but still not in the toilet.

Does anyone have any ideas or experiences that they would be willing to share with us?

We are following a detailed plan from the book "ready steady potty" and have made the toilet a relaxed calm appealing environment he does not mind sitting on the toilet, he just does not seem to get the idea that this is where he should go.

thanks in anticipation

  • I would say if your child is sitting on the toilet then that is a positive step. I am in the process of toilet training my 5 1/2 year old. He has a pecs routine which includes symbols for pants down, have a wee etc. it has been a long process over a year so far and has been hit and miss so far. Sometimes he has been sitting happily others will just outright refuse. Over the past couple of weeks he has finally started to do a few wee's on the toilet. We are not there yet by a long shot as will still wee on the carpet etc and seems confused by underpants. The main thing is just to keep trying as part of everyday routine such as after a drink or after mealtimes. I have heard suggestions such as placing a ball in the toilet to encourage the child to aim and wee. Not good in our case as my little one is a big fan of posting and is keen on sticking his head in the toilet bowl and hands in the waste pipe. He has gone from being afraid to even sit to the opposite extreme. We have tried bidet trays which sit under the toilet seat lid which seemed to make the drop less frightening. Bribery I.e sit on and you can have a Jaffa cake.  Some parents let thier children sit with an iPad or favourite toy whilst sitting which they said seemed to provide a distraction. You will get there in the end. Like most things its just trial and error.
