adult diagnosis

So i have a 7 year old boy diagnosed with atypical autism and a 3 yr old girl who has just had her ados test and await final diagnosis, although there pretty sure she is also atypical.

my question is how do you go on about having am adult diagnosed?

i have been with my partner 10 years,he is also the childrens father. sinve my son was diagnosed 3 yr ago and the more i have read about autism, the more i have become convinced my partner has some form.

he has suffered from depression since the age of 14,sees things in a very black n white way there is never a middle road for him. he struggles in social situations. he left school at 14 as he jus didnt fit in and caused triouble(he says for attention) the similarities between him and my son are astounding, his mother also says the way my son is now is how my partner was when he was a child.

we have visited our doctor but he seemed very unhelpful and said they wont diagnose and adult?

any help would be appreciated

  • Hi M

Just wanted to say we are in the same situation and my MiL says my DS is exactly like his dad etc..we have been to our GP who has made the referral. We are awaiting CAMHS for DS and have an Aug appointment.

We are currently awaiting a phone call where they will discuss my partners concerns (he's been depressed and anxious for about 5 years now) and decide who he needs to see.

I expect it will be a slow process and my partner is finding this aspect hard to deal with..he is convinced (as am I) that this has always been missed..but we are finding out as much as we can and working through it. It's been a huge relief to him that he can understand better why he does the things he does.

Keep at it and ring the NAS helpline (they are ace) if you need further advice.

Good luck and I hope things get easier for you soon.
