Who makes the final decision?

Hi all I just wanted to ask who is it that makes the final decision on diagnoses?

My sons peadiatrician agrees that my son is ASD, but the SALT has said that he does not tick every single box for a diagnoses!

So is that it now, decision made and he is discharged?

  • All professionals give input into the process, it would usually be the paediatrician (as the senior professional) but with having taken colleagues' input into consideration.

It's not a tick-box exercise and professionals would do well to remember that, it's a spectrum and strength and presence of traits will vary between individuals.  Perhaps remind them of that fact!

Ask for a definitive decision so that you know what his label is.
