Chronic pain

I experience chronic pain but no idea why.

I've had so many tests in the last couple of years, the doctors have been patient and understanding but nothing has been found. The last doctor I saw last month said she thinks it's down to anxiety and I expect she's right but it doesn't stop my health anxiety flaring up. I keep worrying it's something like cancer. Pretty stupid of me, I hate how I get sometimes.

This week there's been construction work on my house. The builders have dealt with my parents and I've not been in touch with them once but I've been attacked by great waves of anxiety. During this time the pain I experience has been at its worse, especially pain in my chest, shoulder, stomach and hands. Everything is so painful.

A girl at school I was friends with also had autism and ADHD and she experienced chronic pain as well, I'm not sure if she was ever diagnosed with anything later but at the time it was said to be anxiety as well.

Anyone else relate to the continuous pain for no apparent reason?

It's there, mild, then it intensifies or becomes so bad I have to call 999. I've been in hospital 3 times this year for pain management, the hospital staff are kind as always but it looks bad on my part when they can't find anything wrong.

I wish there was a cure because I hate being in pain and making a fuss.

  • I've had chronic pain for about 20 years- I do know what it is now, but it took a very long time to get any diagnoses at all, let alone getting everything identified. I have three different chronic pain conditions!

It may well be anxiety-induced for you, but it's probably also worth considering that there are multiple things going on for you too, especially since testing hasn't identified one precise cause. It's really common for autistic people to have multiple co-morbidities and that can include both identifiable and mystery chronic pain.
