Orthodontist Appointment

My 10yr son had an orthodontist appointment yesterday.  We prepared him with a social story which worked really well.  He defo needs a brace as could loose teeth if the crossover bite is not sorted soon.

When the dentist went to do the impressions my son was fine until the mould with putty in was put in his mouth. He couldn't tolerate the texture or the taste and ended up being sick.

I would like you know if anyone has any ideas on how we get through this so he can have the impressions done.  If anyone has had similar experience.  Any thing advice / guidence would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

  • Hi - there are some specialist dental practices up + down the country.  My son went to 1 because he doesn't like needles, meaning our usual dentist couldn't do the tooth, They were brilliant, but I don't know if they have a different way of doing moulds.  If you have a social worker s/he may know of such a practice to call + have a chat about it.

  • Hi Thank you for replying IntenseWorld it must have been horrible for you, watching my son go through that wasn't nice and was extreamly bad for him too. My son was so dissappointed that he couldn't ge the moulds done as he had been able to do everything else which was a first for him as he would normally just shut down and refuse to do anything.

Stranger - Thank you for replying The orthodontist is aware that he has ASD but his only response to it was to try again in a year.  But I know my son and waiting a year will make no difference to being able to tolerate the moulds/putty without help doing so until then.  I just don't know how to help him to be able to tolerate having the impressions done.

  • Is the dentist aware that your son is Autistic? I'm sure they've come across this before. They may (as mentioned above) have other moulds that can be used.

I do think you need to speak to the dentist about the issues your son has.

  • I so sympathise with this.  I have AS and I had a course of dental treatment which meant 2-3 occasions with those moulds and I was dry-heaving violently with the dentist hanging onto the mould and my head from behind to stop it being ejected out.  Sorry I don't have any suggestions but it might be worth researching whether there are softer moulds that could be used in the smallest size possible and ensure the dentist doesn't put too much cement in it as with me there was a trailing glob of it going down the back of my throat and it was more than I could bear.  By the time he finished I looked like a wreck with tears streaming down my face and red eyes from the watering eyes from retching.  Go prepared!
