A bad night/morning

Before I continue, I wish to make it clear that I am absolutely not requesting medical advice...

Sorry folks, I come bearing the gift of (yet another) dental-related tale of woe.

Yesterday (Friday), I awoke feeling drowsy and spaced out, but otherwise OK. At some point during the afternoon, I started getting twinges of pain in my left ear, so took a couple of paracetamol. During the evening, I ended up with a reusable cold compress against my ear, as the twinges hadn't eased off. At 10pm, I took my 3rd dose of antibiotics for the day, followed by a couple of Co-codamol tablets an hour later.

By midnight, I was continuing to experience pain in my ear, in addition to sensitivity on the left side of my mouth. This is when I realised that I had made an error with the two previous doses of antibiotics. Instead of taking 1 Erythromycin 250mg tablet and 1 Metronidazole 400mg tablet together, my 2nd and 3rd doses consisted of 2 Metronidazole tablets. Oops! Face palm

Between the hours of midnight and 7am this morning, I was back to howling in pain. In addition to the cold compress I was clutching against my ear, I was also clutching a bag of frozen carrots against the front of my mouth.

My fingers are now crossed that I don't make any further blunders with my antibiotics.

  • Hi Sparkly, you shouldn’t now be in so much pain, the antibiotics obviously aren’t clearing the infection, some infections can become resistant. While it’s still early today contact the dentist and explain how you are still in so much pain. They may recommend a stronger course or a different type. Do this early so you don’t have to do the last minute chemist dash. Instead of something cold on the area, I have found a hot water bottle quite helpful in the past. Take care.
