waiting for diagnosis...

Hi,

We are just going down the route of getting my 8 year old son diagnosed with possible Aspergers. He has already been assessed and diagnosed with Dyslexia.

The referral has been done by his school. (We live in Scotland) We have had a letter back from each of the groups, all stating that there is a long waiting list.

The waiting list for CAMh is currently 18 months - is this normal? Should we be expecting better?

Just feels like such a long time for my son to continue struggling.

In 2009 the HEAT target ‘By March 2013 no one will wait longer than 26 weeks from referral to treatment for specialist CAMH services’ was approved by the Scottish Government for inclusion in HEAT from April 2010."
Write to your CAMHS insisting that your child is seen within the deadlines. Mention it to everyone you know in the same position too, if it's not advertised they will continue getting away with it. Also, if they say it's impossible ask the GP to refer out of area where your child will be seen quicker as it's detrimental to him waiting that long.
